About This Training

This 6-hour continuing education training provides Certified Recovery Peer Advocates (CRPAs) and Certified Addiction Recovery Coaches (CARCs) with trauma-informed skills to respond to emotional distress and crisis situations while maintaining peer role integrity and personal wellbeing. Participants will explore the peer-appropriate definition of a crisis, the impact of trauma on the nervous system, and person-centered de-escalation practices rooted in safety, empathy, and self-determination. Through discussion, scenarios, and skill-building exercises, peers will learn how to recognize escalating distress, apply supportive de-escalation strategies, maintain boundaries and scope of practice, and determine when to involve supervision or emergency services. Emphasis is placed on supporting others while protecting one’s own regulation and wellness before, during, and after a crisis event. Peers will leave better equipped to provide compassionate, safe, and ethical crisis support aligned with their unique role within the recovery process.

Learning Objectives

  • Distinguish peer-support crises from clinical emergencies and recognize role limitations.

  • Identify signs of escalating distress and understand how trauma affects crisis responses.

  • Apply trauma-informed, peer-centered de-escalation and grounding strategies.

  • Use reflective listening, validation, and person-centered communication during crisis situations.

  • Determine when supervision, clinical support, or emergency services are needed.

  • Maintain ethical boundaries, safety practices, and appropriate documentation during crisis response.

  • Use self-regulation and post-crisis wellness strategies to reduce burnout and secondary trauma.
